Sculptra and HA filler are both done under the supervision of a medical director. I'm the licensed RN doing the injection, following physician-directed protocols. My medical director has 23 years of practice and about 12 years in aesthetics. You can look up my license on the North Carolina Board of Nursing site.
| Sculptra (PLLA) | HA filler | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Helps your body build collagen | Adds volume where it is placed |
| When you see it | Gradually, over weeks | Right away, settling by two weeks |
| Can it be dissolved? | No | Yes, with hyaluronidase |
| Typical plan | More than one session | Often one visit, then touch-ups |
| Priced | Per session, quoted at consult | Per syringe, quoted at consult |
Some people use both: HA filler for one defined area and Sculptra for the overall picture. I'll tell you whether that makes sense for you or whether one is enough.
The FDA notes that fillers not made of materials such as hyaluronic acid can be difficult or impossible to remove. That's the honest trade-off: HA filler can be dissolved, and Sculptra can't. If the idea of something you can't undo makes you uneasy, start with HA.
See my pricing page: Sculptra per session, HA filler per syringe, both quoted at consult. You get an exact estimate at the free consult.
Pressure and quick pinches. Some fillers contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine. Plan on some swelling and maybe a bruise for a few days; most people carry on with their day.
The FDA says PLLA effects generally show up gradually over several weeks and may last up to 2 years. For HA, the FDA says it depends on the material and the area.
Bring the question as it is: "which one?" I'll look at your face from the front and side, at rest and moving, and walk you through the table above with your face in mind.
The FDA's page on dermal fillers explains the risks. Wait if you're under 22, since the FDA approves dermal fillers for adults 22 and older, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, because the FDA says filler safety there is unknown. If the skin where we'd treat is inflamed or infected, including acne, a rash, or hives, we reschedule. Tell me about a bleeding disorder, severe allergies or past anaphylaxis, a lidocaine allergy, or a tendency to form keloids or raised scars.
The FDA lists bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, and itching as common dermal filler side effects and says many clear up within days to weeks. The most serious risk is filler getting into a blood vessel. The FDA calls that chance low, but it can cause tissue damage, vision problems including blindness, or stroke. Get care right away for unusual pain, any change in your vision, or skin near the injection site that turns white, gray, or blue.
